The Wind-Solar Hybrid Power Generation System is mainly composed of wind turbine generator sets, solar photovoltaic (PV) module arrays, controllers, storage batteries, inverters, AC/DC loads, etc. The system structure diagram is shown in the attached figure. This system is a composite renewable energy power generation system that integrates multiple energy power generation technologies such as wind energy, solar energy, and storage batteries, as well as system intelligent control technology.
(1) The wind power generation part uses wind turbines to convert wind energy into mechanical energy, and wind generators to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. Then, the controller charges the storage batteries, and the inverter supplies power to the loads.
(2) The photovoltaic power generation part utilizes the photovoltaic effect of solar panels to convert light energy into electrical energy, then charges the storage batteries, and converts direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC) through the inverter to supply power to the loads.
(3) The inverter system consists of several inverters, which convert the DC power in the storage batteries into standard 220V AC power to ensure the normal use of AC load equipment. It also has an automatic voltage regulation function, which can improve the power supply quality of the wind-solar hybrid power generation system.
(4) The control part continuously switches and adjusts the working status of the storage battery bank according to changes in solar irradiance, wind force, and load: on the one hand, it directly sends the adjusted electrical energy to DC or AC loads. On the other hand, it sends excess electrical energy to the storage battery bank for storage. When the power generation cannot meet the load demand, the controller sends the electrical energy from the storage batteries to the load, ensuring the continuity and stability of the entire system’s operation.
(5) The storage battery part is composed of multiple storage batteries, which play two major roles in the system: energy regulation and load balancing. It converts the electrical energy output by the wind power generation system and the photovoltaic power generation system into chemical energy for storage, for use when there is insufficient power supply.
The wind-solar hybrid power generation system can operate in the following three modes according to changes in wind force and solar radiation: the wind turbine generator set supplies power to the load alone; the photovoltaic power generation system supplies power to the load alone; the wind turbine generator set and the photovoltaic power generation system jointly supply power to the load.
Wind-solar hybrid power generation has the following advantages over standalone wind power generation or photovoltaic power generation:
- By utilizing the complementarity of wind energy and solar energy, a relatively stable output can be obtained, and the system has high stability and reliability.
- Under the condition of ensuring the same power supply, the capacity of energy storage batteries can be greatly reduced [5].
- Through reasonable design and matching, the wind-solar hybrid power generation system can basically supply power, with little or no need to start backup power sources such as diesel generator sets, thus achieving good social and economic benefits.
